SES PhD student René Castillo participated in the NSF CONVERSE CSBI, became FEMA-certified, and attended an IODP program all in one summer!

SES PhD student René Castillo participated in the NSF CONVERSE CSBI WORKSHOP, "Converging on Eruption Science with Equity." She spent a week at University of New Mexico getting FEMA certified to respond to and plan for volcanic eruptions. She reports, “I got to learn some degassing and geophysical field work techniques.” She also spent a week at the Gulf Coast Repository for the International Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) in College Station, TX getting to learn about the resources for Scientific Ocean Drilling. The participants networked and began planning for their disciplines' future within SciOD as the JR research vessel retires. Her reflection on the experience will be featured in the new USSSP digital newsletter, the Drilling Dispatch, in the recurring article "From the field," published on September 1.
