The field of earth science encompasses some of the most important issues facing society, including climate change, the environment, human health, geologic hazards, and energy and mineral resources. All students have the opportunity to engage with world-class facutly who are dedicated teachers and researchers. The School of Earth Sciences (SES) emphasizes hands-on research in the field, lab, and computing for both graduate and undergraduates. Our research facilities train students in analysis of water, gases, soils, and rock. SES students entering fulfilling careers in Earth Sciences in sectors that include environmental consulting, government agencies, the energy industry, national laboraties, and universities.
SES offers both the BA and BS in Earth Science open to any undergraduate enrolled at Ohio State. The BS degree consits of subprograms in Geological Sciences, Earth System Science, Geophysics, and Petroleum Geology and Geophysics. SES offers MS (thesis and non-thesis) and PhD degrees in Earth Science and Geodetic Science. Students pursuing graduate degrees in Earth Science tend to have research interests in Earth and planetary processes, while students within the Geodetic Science degree program have primary interests in remote sensing, navigation and mapping.
