Prospective Students

The field of earth science encompasses some of the most important issues facing society, including climate change, the environment, human health, geologic hazards, and energy and mineral resources. All students have the opportunity to engage with world-class faculty who are dedicated teachers and researchers. The School of Earth Sciences (SES) emphasizes hands-on research in the field, lab, and computing for both graduate and undergraduates. Our research facilities train students in analysis of water, gases, soils, and rocks. SES students entering fulfilling careers in Earth Sciences in sectors that include environmental consulting, government agencies, the energy industry, national laboratories, and universities.

Undergraduate Programs

SES offers both the BA and BS in Earth Science open to any undergraduate enrolled at Ohio State. The BS degree consists of subprograms in Climate, Water, and the EnvironmentGeological Sciences, and Geophysics. Please contact the SES undergraduate advisor Dr. Karen Royce at royce.6@osu.edu or (614) 292-6961 for more information.

Graduate Programs

SES offers MS (thesis and non-thesis) and PhD degrees in Earth Science and Geodetic Science. Students pursuing graduate degrees in Earth Science tend to have research interests in Earth and planetary processes, while students within the Geodetic Science degree program have primary interests in remote sensing, navigation and mapping. If you are interested in our graduate program, explore the faculty pages and feel free to contact individual faculty about their research and opportunities in their research groups. While graduate applications are considered on a rolling basis, those interested in teaching assistantships or University fellowships should apply by late fall to receive full consideration for the following academic year. Please see how to apply and email the graduate program coordinator Ms. Angie Rogers at rogers.399@osu.edu or (614) 292-8746 for more information.
