Steven Lower's research spans a range of disciplines, including microbiology, mineralogy, and biophysics. Recent projects include biomineralizing magnetic particles, cancer caused by nanoscale minerals, acidophilic bacteria that oxidize sulfides, and infectious biofilms on medical implants. The work by his team has been published in Science, Nature, and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, as well as journals like the Journal of Bacteriology, Applied and Environmental Microbiology, Langmuir, Environmental Science & Technology, Physical Review Letters, Biophysical Journal,  Journal of Biological Chemistry, Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, and American Mineralogist.  Support for this research has been provided by the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the Department of Energy.
