New Article from PhD candidate Kara Lamantia and Professor Lonnie Thompson

PhD candidate Kara Lamantia and Professor Lonnie Thompson have published a new paper on ice loss in tropical glaciers.

Local NBC4 recently interviewed them to learn more about the study. You can find the news story and video here

Graduate Student Batoul Saad attends US Science Support Program Workshop

Batoul Saad, a graduate student advised by Professor Liz Griffith, attended the U.S. Science Support Program Workshop "Planktonic Foraminiferal Biostratigraphy and Taxonomy” from August 18 to August 24 held at the Department of Earth, Geographic, and Climate Sciences, on the campus of the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Batoul learned about planktic foraminiferal biostratigraphy and taxonomy while receiving extensive microscope time with the key marker species from the middle Cretaceous through the Cenozoic. Thank you, USSSP, for your continued scientific ocean drilling support!

Professor Demián Gómez and his group.

Professor Demián Gómez and PhD candidates Mara Figueroa and Franco Sobrero, traveled to Costa Rica

Professor Demián Gómez and PhD candidates Mara Figueroa and Franco Sobrero, traveled to Costa Rica to teach a five-day course on "Non-linear Deformation Models Using GNSS Data" at the School of Topography, Cadaster, and Geodesy of the National University of Costa Rica. Led by Professor Gómez, this workshop was an excellent opportunity to contribute to geodetic capacity-building efforts in the Americas. Franco and Mara's participation in this training course would not have been possible without the support from the Friends of Orton Hall award.

Grottoli's group does an O-H-I-O in Hawai‘i

New Publication from Professor Grottoli

A new paper by Professor Grottoli's team in Nature Communications Earth & Environment shows the positive impact of zooplankton feeding on coral resilience and that ocean acidification does not prolong recovery from bleaching. Learn more about their work, which is also in collaboration with the Hawai‘i Institute of Marine Biology, in the recent press release.

Memoir from Alumnus Michael D. Campbell

Alumnus Michael D. Campbell has authored a memoir that includes a section on his time in SES. Learn more here.

CK Shum Honored in 18th Street Library Display

Geodetic Science Professor CK Shum is now honored among OSU’s Nobel Prize winners at the display at the 18th Street Library. Read more here.

Advanced Oceanography Field Trip

Dr. Grottoli and her Advanced Oceanography class students visited corals at the Reef Systems Coral Farm in New Albany, Ohio. They saw marine fish, birds, and mammals at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. The field trip helps to connect students to the ocean in Ohio (but is still within an easy drive in the SES vans).

Professor Liz Griffith hosts 3-day U.S. Science Support Program Workshop

Assoc. Prof. Liz Griffith hosted a 3-day U.S. Science Support Program Workshop, "TARGETING PACIFIC HIGHS FOR PAST RECORDS OF WARM CLIMATES," at The Ohio State University's Franz Theodore Stone Laboratory on Gibraltar Island in Lake Erie (October 1-4). Twenty-five U.S.-supported scientists, including Earth Science Ph.D. student Batoul Saad, traveled from distant locations to the island campus, joining four international scientists from Germany, Japan, and Norway to build communities around shared research questions, reexamine available sediments, and develop expedition proposals targeting Pacific Highs.  You might recognize another participant, alum Brian Huber (MS '84, PhD '88 ), the Curator of Foraminifera at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. A big thanks to Prof. Emeritus Larry Krissek for spending a day with us at Stone Lab to provide an update on scientific ocean drilling as director of the JOIDES Resolution Advisory Board and to share his knowledge and experience teaching geology at Stone Lab. It was a spectacular location for a scientific workshop!

Hydrogeology Class Outing

Professor Audrey Sawyer’s hydrogeology class (ES 5651) has been active at the Mirror Lake Water Science Learning Lab, performing slug and pump tests. We thank our visitors from ODNR who shared experiences from their careers and tips on well tests while we collected data.
