Students Measure Geochemistry in the Field

Students Measure Geochemistry in the Field

In September, the Introduction to Geochemistry class (taught by Professor Liz Griffith) traveled to southeast Ohio to look at water quality impacted by the legacy of coal mining in the region. Students measured in the field water pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, alkalinity, total iron and hardness. A striking difference was seen in waters that were actively being remediated and those that were discharging from the abandoned mines.
