Stephen R. Jacobson, an alumnus of the then Department of Geology and Mineralogy, passed away on December 24, 2021. Steve earned a B.S. degree from Dickinson College (1969) and a M.A. from Harvard University (1972) prior to coming to Ohio State University, where he earned a Ph. D. in 1978. His dissertation was titled “Acritarchs from Middle and Upper Ordovician rocks in New York State and the Cincinnati Region in Ohio and Indiana” under the direction of Academy Professor Stig M. Bergström. After graduation, Steve joined the Chevron Oil Company, first in Denver, Colorado and then in La Habra, California. Unfortunately, health issues forced him into premature retirement in 1994. After retirement from Chevron, Steve and his family moved back to central Ohio. Steve was a smart, very gregarious, engaging person who maintained contact with fellow alumni and in academia, government, and the petroleum industry. While back in Columbus during the 1990s and early 2000s, Steve was instrumental in initiating and building endowment funds (including the Kresge Fund and other funds), which have been key for successes of the School of Earth Sciences. In 2002, Steve moved to Haverford, Pennsylvania.
