Mediterranean corals thrive in acidic volcanic seeps by eating more zooplankton. A new study lead by Dr. Ann Marie Hulver used stable isotope and radiocarbon mixing models to show the large contribution of zooplankton to the diet of corals living in acidic volcanic seeps compared to their conspecifics in adjacent non-acidified seawater. Eating more zooplankton provides more nutrition and allows these corals to grow and thrive under hostile ocean acidification conditions.

Professor Ann Cook is sailing on the European Consortium for Ocean Drilling (ECORD)-US National Science Foundation (NSF) funded Expedition 501, drilling offshore Martha's Vineyard for submarine fresh water. Expedition 501 has been ongoing for several weeks, and the team has already identified and pumped freshwater from an aquifer under the seafloor. Professor Cook is integrating seismic, well log and core data to help the team identify intervals for further coring, sampling and pump tests.
