Prof Grottoli and her team are in Hawaii for the month of June conducting research on technologies that will help corals survive this century. They are setting up an experiment to evaluate the effectiveness of Grottoli's patented technology UZELA to minimize coral bleaching impacts. UAZELA (Underwater Zooplankton Enhancement Light Array) locally concentrates natural zooplankton giving corals more to eat, which helps them grow more and die less. Pictured clockwise from top left are SES PhD candidate Shannon Dixon, SES undergraduate in the climate-water-environment track Emma van Buren, SES Professor Andréa Grottoli, and Columbus School for Girls high school student Marcella Grottoli.
In January 2024, Mara Figueroa (PhD student with Dr. Demian Gomez) and Franco Sebastián Sobrero (PhD student with Dr. Mike Bevis) did field work in Argentina with tcolleague Juan Carlos Navarro for 2 weeks. They measured GNSS survey sites from the Central Andes GNSS Project. These measurements are vital to study and understand the deformation in this part of the Andes. They traveled more than 8000 km and surveyed 25 GNSS sites distributed over the entire province of San Juan.
New postdoctoral scientist, Dr. Daniel Gonzalez-Duque, has joined Professor Audrey Sawyer’s research team. Dr. Gonzalez-Duque received his PhD from Vanderbilt University and has expertise in surface water-groundwater interactions. He will be working on new modeling approaches to predict saltwater intrusion in coastal aquifers, funded by the US Department of Defense.
Dr. Jill Leonard-Pingel was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure this May. Drs. Ashley Griffith, Joachim Moortgat, and Audrey Sawyer were also. promoted to Full Professor. Congratulations!
Professor W. Berry Lyons has been awarded the International Association of Geochemistry (IAGC) 2024 Harmon Distinguished Service Award.
