CarmenZoom Tips

Keep it simple!

Best practice for remote teaching should be to keep things as simple as possible. For recording videos, keep them short and sweet, this minimizes potential issues with any single recording (and makes them much easier to download). This also helps with student involvement as it breaks down topics into chunks instead of one long video.

Creating a Zoom meeting

Easiest way is to go to https://osu.zoom.us. Log in to the web interface, click on Meetings in the left menu bar, and select Schedule a New Meeting. This is useful for scheduling office hours or other future meetings.

If hosting office hours, it is a good idea to uncheck Enable join before host.

Saving videos

Best practice for saving Zoom recordings is to save the files locally. This ensures you still have access to the content you create in case there are any issues with Zoom or the cloud provider used for saving these files in the future. These videos can then be uploaded to CarmenCanvas or BuckeyeBox and shared via URL.

Video hosting options

YouTube is a popular location to host lecture videos, but due to various countries blocking access to YouTube, it is not an ideal location for hosting course videos at this time.

Remote connection to campus

If you need to remotely connect to a campus desktop, you should utilize the OCIO service named Guacamole. The instructions for this new service are here: https://osuasc.teamdynamix.com/TDClient/1929/Portal/KB/ArticleDet?ID=100529.

Communication/collaboration tools

The recommended communication/collaboration tools are:

Skype for Business for all business-related chat and audio/video calling.

CarmenZoom for academic purposes, such as classes, consultations and work group meetings.

Microsoft Teams (download link) for group collaboration and chat.
