For many years the American Institute of Professional Geologists and Sigma Gamma Epsilon have played pivotal roles in the student life in the School of Earth Sciences.
Over the last two years as enrollment numbers have decreased, membership has declined in these two organizations. In addition to almost identical membership and leadership, and an unofficial merging of the two, the students decided to officially make changes.
The Ohio State Geoscience Club will serve as the umbrella student organization for AIPG and SGE in the School of Earth Sciences while keeping national status for those organizations. It will also focus on scholarship, leadership, philanthropy, service, outreach, and fellowship.
This new club will eliminate confusion over the two previous organizations, and hopefully foster a closer-knit earth science community for both undergraduates and graduate students. Members will benefit from networking opportunities, outreach programs, community service, social events, educational events, field trips, and a potential scholarship for attending field camp.
The club has already planned events and programs for the spring semester, and are excited to announce the launch of their Field Camp Scholarship Sticker Fundraiser which you can read about here.
The student leadership believes this will truly be a positive change to the School of Earth Sciences.
