During the pandemic, SES has continued our educational mission to the best of our abilities. See below for how several SES courses have adapted by going outside and online.
Earth Science 4502: Sedimentation & Stratigraphy
Students worked on a newly designed laboratory assignment during the 2020 fall semester. The exercise takes advantage of Orton Hall’s unique exterior of natural Ohio formations arranged in stratigraphic order and provides a valuable outdoor and hands-on experience.
– Derek Sawyer, Associate Professor, School of Earth Sciences
Earth Science 4560 Applied Geophysics
Pre-Covid, we’d measure the height of the Thompson Library using gravity. This year, with the help of Mike Smith at Ohio Stadium, we were able to measure the height of the Shoe, collecting gravity measurements in the stadium. Our adapted laboratory procedure had 10 times the Buckeye Spirit and reduced the risk of COVID spread.
– Ann Cook, Associate Professor, School of Earth Sciences.
Earth Science 1100: Planet Earth (GE)
Students take a tour of the tropical glacial Huascaran in Peru using the virtual reality tools developed by Kira Harris (BS 2020) for the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center. Students use their tour and real data from Huascaran ice cores to reconstruct the Earth’s past climate.
– JJ Kim, GTA, School of Earth Sciences
