Bertsch Awarded A&S Research Scholarship

Congratulations to McKenzie Bertsch, BS student in Earth Sciences, who was awarded an Arts and Sciences Honors Committee Undergraduate Research Scholarship ($4000) in December 2021. McKenzie is currently writing up results collected for her Senior Thesis this Spring 2022, advised by Associate Professor Liz Griffith. Her proposed work on “Marine barite content during recovery from the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) and long-term effects in the post Eocene Epoch” describes new results from approximately 55 million year old deep sea sediment recovered from Shatsky Rise in the Pacific Ocean. Sample preparation in the wet geochemistry lab (see photo) was completed prior to imaging the sample residues using the scanning electron microscope. Great job, McKenzie!
