Graduate student spotlight: Lindsey Hernandez

SES Ph.D. Student Lindsey Hernandez, advised by Dr. Michael Barton, has been chosen as a 2020 recipient of the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship to support her research on Guatemalan Volcanoes! The NSF GRFP is highly competitive with only about 15% of applicants from across the country awarded. Previous SES student and alum awardees include Melisa Diaz, PhD 2020, and Kelsey Bisson, BS 2013.

In addition to this incredible achievement, Lindsey has also received a 2019 Tinker Foundation Field Research Grant through OSU Center for Latin American Studies! The Tinker Foundation’s Field Research Grants Program is designed to provide budding scholars with a first-hand experience of their region of study, regardless of academic discipline.  The grants provide graduate students with funds for travel to and within Latin America to conduct pre-dissertation research.  These awards allow students to acquire a comprehensive knowledge of language and culture, familiarize themselves with information sources relevant to their studies, conduct pilot studies and preliminary investigations, and develop contacts with scholars and institutions in their respective fields.

Well done, Lindsey! We are proud to have you as a student.
