Global glacier mass loss is one of the greatest contributors to sea-level rise, impacts downstream water resources, alters flood hazards, and affects tourism and cultures around the world. This talk will showcase the latest glacier projections through 2100 using the Python Glacier Evolution Model (PyGEM) for ensembles of shared socioeconomic pathways and temperature change scenarios. We will dive into recent advances in modeling capabilities and new opportunities to leverage remote sensing to improve projections. Recent field campaigns on Gulkana Glacier in Alaska will also highlight the unique knowledge that field data provides and challenges with existing large-scale glacier evolution models in capturing site-specific processes. The talk will close with a holistic perspective on the future of global glacier evolution modeling, opportunities to leverage remote sensing and field data, and the impacts at global, regional, and local scales.
