OSU Graduate Student Presents Research at International Marine Sediments Conference in UK
Ohio State University School of Earth Sciences graduate student Saffron Martin traveled to Southampton, United Kingdom, this October to present her research at the Gas in Marine Sediments (GIMS16) conference, held at the National Oceanography Centre from October 20-24, 2025.
Martin's attendance at the international gathering was made possible through funding from Friends of Orton Hall. She presented a poster on gas hydrate-filled fractures discovered within sediment cores collected offshore New Zealand.
The biennial GIMS conference has brought together earth and ocean scientists from around the world since 1990. Researchers including geologists, biologists, geophysicists, biogeochemists, and engineers gather to discuss topics ranging from methane hydrates to offshore carbon storage. This year's meeting featured keynote presentations from leading researchers and addressed emerging topics in climate change mitigation and green energy transition.
Martin attended the conference alongside fellow School of Earth Sciences graduate student Aditya Kumar. The event gave the OSU researchers a chance to connect with international experts in marine sediment gas research and share their work with colleagues from across the globe.
