Where has your degree taken you?

I proceeded on to graduate school studying earthquake seismology at University of California, Santa Cruz working with Dr. Thorne Lay.  Originally I had intended to get my PhD and stay in academia.  However, I found that wasn’t the path for me and received my MS in 1998 and then a full time offer at Exxon in Houston, TX as a processing geophysicist, July 1998.  Since 1998 I have traveled the world working projects for ExxonMobil in deep water and onshore USA.  I started as a geophysicist but moved progressively toward drilling wells as an operations geologist.  I’m currently a geoscientist implementing geophysical, petrophysical, and geological data toward well planning for a large development campaign for the company.

How do you feel your experience, specifically as an SES/geology student at OSU, prepared you for your career or life in general?

I think working my way through my interests in geology and geophysics as an OSU student helped guide me in my strengths and interest.

What is your favorite memory as a student?

Working with Hal Noltimier for my senior thesis.

What advice do you have for current and future students?

Take time between undergraduate and graduate school (if possible) to find your professional “calling”.  Also take time between graduation and full-time employment (if possible) to enjoy seeing some bucket list items, as only 2 weeks of vacation per year is WAY too short!
