The School of Earth Sciences is proud to congratulate Thomas Darrah, Professor of Earth Sciences at The Ohio State University, on being named a recipient of the Geological Society of America (GSA) 50 Under 50 Award. The award recognizes outstanding mid-career geoscientists whose achievements in research, service, mentorship, and leadership are advancing the geosciences and strengthening the broader scientific community.

The GSA 50 Under 50 Award is a joint initiative of the Geological Society of America, the Geological Association of Canada, and the Sociedad Geológica Mexicana. Each year, up to 50 geoscientists from across North America are recognized for their exceptional contributions to the field and their growing impact as scientific leaders.

At Ohio State, Darrah is internationally recognized for pioneering research at the intersection of geochemistry, energy resources, environmental science, and groundwater systems. His work has transformed understanding of subsurface fluid systems and the geologic controls on naturally occurring hydrogen and helium resources, while also informing critical questions related to energy development, environmental stewardship, and Earth system processes.

Darrah's influence extends well beyond academia. He serves as Chief Technology Officer of Koloma, a company advancing the exploration and development of naturally occurring geologic hydrogen as a clean energy resource. He also serves as Director of the Office of Industry Partnerships and Commercialization in Ohio State's College of Arts and Sciences, helping to foster collaborations between researchers, industry partners, entrepreneurs, and investors to accelerate the translation of scientific discoveries into societal and economic impact.

Through these roles, Darrah exemplifies the increasingly important connection between fundamental research, innovation, and public benefit. His work demonstrates how geoscience discoveries can be transformed into technologies and partnerships that address major challenges in energy, sustainability, and resource development.

In addition to his research and innovation leadership, Darrah is widely recognized as an outstanding mentor and educator. He has trained and inspired students, postdoctoral scholars, and early-career scientists who are themselves making important contributions across academia, industry, and government.
