Title: When AI meets Ice: AI-driven Discovery in Polar Science

Abstract: Despite their critical role in the global climate system, polar regions remain one of the least explored areas of our planet due to two fundamental challenges: (1) limited availability of in-situ observations and (2) incomplete physical understanding of complex dynamical processes. AI and deep learning can offer transformative opportunities to address these challenges by (1) leveraging satellite remote sensing observations and (2) learning highly non-linear mechanisms of ice dynamics. Dr. Koo uses cutting-edge AI techniques as innovative tools to address traditional challenges in polar science, ranging from sea ice to land ice, across both observational and modeling applications, thereby advancing scientific understanding of polar regions. Dr. Koo will also outline his future vision for AI-driven innovations in polar science, including remote sensing data fusion and physics-informed modeling frameworks.
